The world has seen an outburst of usage in information and communication technology systems and devices. In fact, a research paper titled Metrics and Measurement Technologies for Green Communications, published as part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Innovation Program, has come up with some startling findings. The volume of downlink traffic from mobile handheld devices is expected to rise drastically from 56 MB per month to 455 MB, by the year 2015. Broadband optimization techniques are thus the need of the day, in order to give the much-needed thrust to downlink traffic.
Here are some of the prevalent broadband optimization techniques in use today:
Blocking: This is a method that sees the most usage to combat instances of frantic and unjustified gobbling up of bandwidth. The method works by preventing the creation of sessions and works on the protocol basis. However, services providers usually desist from deploying these drastic methods so as not to inconvenience customers.
Caching: This is one of the most widely used broadband optimization techniques to boost downlink traffic. In this method, repeatedly-in use files are stored by a cache server and made available instantly when called for by the user. This does away with the need for them to traverse across expensive network lines. This concept of peer-to-peer caching has its roots in the standard method of web caching.
Compression: In this method, the content sent over the network is first compressed before being delivered to the receivers handset. This compression is achieved in two wayseither in a lossless mode or in a lossy manner. This method of broadband optimization is widely applied in instances where rich multimedia content is delivered and has proven to be especially effective in boosting downlink traffic when bandwidth is at a premium.
Traffic Shaping, Capping, and Throttling: This method is put into practice when only limited bandwidth is available. Service providers employ this method mostly to a select group of protocols like peer-to-peer. This method proves effective to some extent to combat instances of overloaded networks.
The afore-mentioned techniques of broadband optimization are expected to be used extensively in the coming days. For, there will be a staggering 75% rise in the number of mobile phone subscribers in the developing nations of the world by the year 2015 and it is imperative that downlink traffic gets the broadband optimization boost so that customers are benefitted the most.
